We've been enjoying DEVOtional gatherings since 2000, and with the 2010 DEVOtional we celebrated a decade of these spudtacular events.

Since this was such a special DEVOtional for all of us, we decided to remedy something that has been nagging us since the very first event in 2000 - the fact that we always tried to squeeze too many bands into one day/night. This meant that our beloved SPUDBOYS tribute band would always have to start very very late in the night, when most day-long DEVOtional attendees were already a bit tired
.

The solution: Make the DEVOtional a 2-day event: the first being a night of bands on the Friday before the main event on the 2nd day. Friday's bands performed in the Beachland Tavern...which is the smaller stage/bar in the front of the building. The main/2nd day of the event would be in the larger Beachland Ballroom space.

It worked wonderfully! Read on...

Friday, Aug. 27 - KRK Art & Bands @ Beachland

Asterisk Gallery again hosted another KRK Ryden art show on 1st day of the DEVOtional weekend. KRK's paintings, drawings and prints adorned the walls throughout the entire two-floor gallery. Included in the show was the original painting for the cover of the "Not Necessarily Beautiful But Mutated" Vol. 9 CD compilation, plus artwork KRK created for DEVO's aborted Globe Clothing project.

Friday night was band night at the Beachland Tavern...and it was a huge success...featuring performances by Miniature Colossal Men, Mutant Mountain Boys, Malcolm Tent, Poopy Necroponde's Cream Based Soups (w/ Al Mothersbaugh), and International Espionage!. Rev. Ivan Stang also lent his ranting skills to the evening, thank goodness.

See video clips below from Friday night.

After all the bands performed on Friday night, a few of us hung around for drinks, then returned to our hotel rooms for a little rest before the main event on Saturday.

Saturday, Aug. 28 - DEVOtional @ Beachland

2010's DEVOtional was packed full of DEVOtee activities: Special Guest Jerry Casale of DEVO hosted a Q&A session, narrated a slideshow of vintage DEVO concert photos by Jenny Lens, and let us all hear a collection of songs called "DEVO's Demo Dumpster", which included demo versions of songs that didn't make it onto the Something For Everybody album. Mark Mothersbaugh also joined us for a quick 20 min. video chat, taking questions from attendees.

Bands that performed throughout the day/night: Ken The Magic Corner God (KRK Ryden), Nervous Energy, Great Balancing Act, FARTBARF, and our beloved SPUDBOYS (who did an excellent performance of the New Traditionalists" album, plus a few songs from
Something For Everybody). See video below of the FARTBARF and SPUDBOYS sets.

Sorry I wasn't able to get usable footage of all the bands! If anyone has links to other footage, please email me.

Thanks to all my spud comrades who always work so hard to put these events together: Alex Brunelle/Booji Boy's Basement, Scott Orsi, Marc Friedman, Rev. HV Monkey, Rev. Toth Wilder)...and especially to all the generous DEVOtees who have donated their time & money over the years. We couldn't have done it w/o you!

DEVOtional 2011 has been confirmed for Aug. 26/27, 2011!
Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland! See you there!
