L'art Noir Gallery is in the 9th Ward in New Orleans, one of the areas hit hard by the flooding of hurricane Katrina in '05. The Mothersbaugh exhibition has been in the works for nearly two years, and we were honored to be L'art Noir's grand re-opening show in 2006.

L'art Noir was originally founded by Jeffrey Holmes in Fort Lauderdale, FL. After four successful years in FL, Holmes succumbed to his love of New Orleans and relocated there. In April '05, Jeffrey and his wife Andrea purchased a house on St. Claude Avenue in New Orleans, where l'art Noir now has a permanent home.
After relocating, Jeffrey and Andrea were in the midst of renovating the space when hurricane Katrina struck. While the building was largely spared by the storm, it took in three feet of floodwater when the levees broke.

After a year of battling with insurance and mortgage companies, the space has been (mostly!) rebuilt. Sheet rock was put up 2 days before the reception on Nov. 11th, 2006...just in time for one of the best shows we've had in a long time. The 9th Ward is not necessarily known for its art crowds, and doesn't usually attract people from other parts of New Orleans by its nightlife. However, all that is changing, as we saw at L'art Noir on opening reception night. The space was packed most of the night with a variety of people from New Orleans and surrounding areas. Some visitors drove hours from their hometowns to attend the festivities.

Thanks to Jeffrey & Andrea for all their hard work in making this show a reality, and for making my first time in New Orleans a very memorable one.

See you again soon, 9th Ward.
